PTA Audit Checklist
soumya Ghorpade
Your PTA Treasurer should conduct and submit the yearly audit promptly through MemberHub, while also ensuring that their replacement reviews and approves of KS PTA’s budget for approval before taking over the position.
PTA Council’s Legislation Committee oversees legislative advocacy on an individual district basis, including advocating for successful passage of local funding measures.
1. Auditor’s Report
Provide the requested details regarding Bank Statement Balance as of date, Uncleared Check Numbers List and Total Unclear Cheques Subtraction. It must balance on this line.
Once again, I urge all to support our effort! PTA Council committees take on an array of tasks, from legislative advocacy on a district-wide level (our Legislation Committee has been instrumental in passing local funding measures) to creating our World Class Public Schools campaign and communicating with parents through publications like Your School’s World and regular e-mail updates from the superintendent. PTA Council maintains liaisons with Santa Monica City representatives, the School Board, Classroom Teachers Association, SEIU union members and local education foundations. The City Council also keeps in regular contact with the District’s special needs chair in order to monitor progress of implementation of conditions set by them that required it to strike confidentiality clauses from settlement agreements used in special education programs. They receive reports from both Superintendent and principals.
3. Auditor’s Recommendations
The auditor’s recommendations included several steps that the District could take, such as addressing confidentiality clauses in settlement agreements and eliminating an environment of intimidation for special education parents. City Council agreed with these recommendations, and in June 2007 released additional funding conditional upon removal of confidentiality clauses from settlement agreements – this is an outstanding example of PTA advocacy!
Communicate these concerns to both your principal and Council Special Needs Chairman. Attend their meetings when possible and remain in contact.
4. Final Report
The PTA Council in Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District comprises representatives from each school in the District as well as liaisons to local organizations including City government and community leaders. Its legislative committee coordinates local funding measures as well as advocating on issues pertaining to children; while its communication committee runs an aggressive “World Class Public Schools” campaign that features Your Schools World magazine, Public Schools Week events, monthly e-mail newsletter from Superintendent, as well as other forms of communications with parents. Following an audit, parents protested the use of confidentiality clauses in settlement agreements imposed by Council; while parents protested over what was perceived to be confidential terms within settlement agreements which had since been placed upon new contracts being put in effect.
