Culture and product defense go hand-in-hand; senior management must commit to supporting it while your product defense team needs training to stay abreast of evolving threats.
Culture
Culture can mean different things to different people; to a biologist it could mean bacteria in a Petri dish; while for an anthropologist it’s the entirety of human society as a learned set of behavior patterns.
Two of the primary sources of audit nonconformance relate to equipment and food safety culture issues, both of which can contribute to audit nonconformities. With Issue 9, new requirements can help address these concerns and address any related noncompliance.
Join us for this free, live BRC food safety standard webinar as we highlight some of the key changes found in Issue 9. Discover how they could enhance your manufacturing processes while preparing you for audits starting February 2023.
This webinar will cover an array of topics such as internal auditing, root cause analysis and supplier management. In addition, some key changes in BRC Issue 9 such as new labelling control clauses will also be explored as will senior management’s requirement to present a culture plan at audits will also be covered.
Supplier Management
Suppliers are an essential component of business, whether providing raw materials, equipment or services that are vital to its success and pose numerous risk. This is particularly relevant in highly regulated industries where compliance with regulations and industry standards are essential components.
Supplier management processes aim to help organizations minimize these risks by outlining processes and boundaries suppliers are expected to follow and then evaluating them against these goals. This helps businesses ensure they receive reliable goods and services on schedule that meet these expectations.
Additionally, supplier management processes can help businesses reduce costs by consolidating suppliers into one group for significant cost-cutting potential. An effective supplier management program also assists organizations in setting performance metrics and KPIs for suppliers which should be evaluated regularly either through Quarterly Business Reviews or contracts between the parties involved.
Root Cause Analysis
Many will notice a major difference to the standard: its requirement to incorporate culture elements in root cause analysis. This shift has an immediate and substantial effect on how your site handles nonconformances during audits; without an effective culture in place, implementing effective preventive actions against problems will become very challenging.
There have also been some changes to the permitted scope. These relate to sites producing animal primary conversion and those who store/trade food. Furthermore, some requirements have been revised regarding high-risk, ambient and high-care production zones.
BRCGS recently unveiled Issue 9 of their Global Standard Food Safety. Audits taking place after 1 February will use this version, so to prepare you for it they have introduced various training courses such as conversion courses for auditors and sites as well as full Issue 9 training.
Laboratory Results
We have developed the BRC Global Standard Food Safety Issue 9 Auditor Checklist and Site Self-Assessment tool which can assist your site in preparing for an audit against this edition of the standard. It covers all key criteria needed for certification audits while being easily adaptable for use within your operation.
Laboratory results are essential to the success of any food business, providing valuable insight into the state of manufacturing areas as well as potential hazards. However, it’s essential that food businesses understand the limitations of laboratory testing (such as measurement uncertainty) as well as how best to interpret results.
